What Is a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns

A dental crown is a restoration designed to replace enamel structure lost due to infection, erosion, and injury, and our office is proud to place gorgeous appliances made from porcelain, zirconia, and EMAX. We also offer porcelain-fused-to-metal devices. Virtually everyone who has viable teeth that are compromised by infection or injury can be an excellent candidate for dental crowns, but patients will have to be in otherwise good oral health before can receive the appliances. We’ll be happy to address issues like cavities and gum disease with appropriate restorative treatments at our office if necessary to prepare you for your dental crown.

The Dental Crown Process

The first step to receiving a dental crown is scheduling a consultation so Dr. Hudson can evaluate your symptoms and determine the best way to resolve them. If you need a dental crown, he will probably schedule a separate appointment to place it. This procedure will begin with you receiving an appropriate anesthetic to ensure your comfort, and you may also receive sedation if you need a little extra help staying still and calm.

When you are suitably numb, our dentist will carefully remove the damaged material from your tooth, sanitize it, and take detailed measurements of it and the rest of your bite. You’ll be fitted with a temporary crown to wear until your permanent one is complete, and the measurements of your teeth will be sent to a trusted dental lab where a skilled technician will craft your final restoration. When it arrives at our office about two weeks later, you’ll come back to have it cemented in place.
