Why Do Dental Implants Fail?

When a dental implant fails, it can often be attributed to one of the following issues:
- An infection known as peri-implantitis has weakened the gum and bone tissues that are meant to help keep the implant post anchored in place.
- A blow to the face or mouth ended up causing significant damage to the implant post and the area around it.
- The implant post was unable to fuse with the jawbone.
Symptoms of Failed Dental Implants

A failed dental implant may feel loose in your mouth, and it could even fall out altogether. Other possible warning signs of failure include severe pain, bleeding, swelling, and difficulty chewing.
Note that you could experience symptoms of a failed dental implant shortly after having it placed or years afterward. Regardless of the timing, we encourage you to let us know right away if you have any reason to suspect that something has gone wrong with your implant post.
How Dental Implant Salvage Works

Step one, of course, is to examine your mouth to figure out what the true source of the problem is. We’ll then share the results of our examination and give you our recommendation for treatment.
It may be possible to simply leave your dental implants where they are while you get the care you need; it largely depends on the nature and severity of the underlying issue. Rest assured that even if you do need to have your current implant posts taken out, you may be able to get new ones after your oral health has been restored.
