The process of getting dental implants requires oral surgery, which means you’ll have to set aside some time to recover. Of course, it’s completely normal to wonder how quickly you can return to your usual routine following the procedure. While many patients are able to go back to work the day after dental implant surgery, some have to take more than a day or two off. However, every case is unique, meaning it’s possible that complications could extend your recovery timeframe. Read on to learn which factors you need to consider when planning your return to work after dental implant surgery.

Number of Dental Implants

Generally speaking, the more dental implants you get, the more time you need to recover. If you’re only receiving one or two implants, you can look forward to an easier and shorter recovery. You’ll be able to return to work rather quickly! On the other hand, if you’re receiving more than a few implants, you should consider taking an additional day or two off of work to allow swelling, bruising, discomfort, and any other side effects to subside.

Bone Grafting

Some patients do not have enough bone to support dental implants. If that’s the case with you, your dentist may recommend bone grafting to make you a viable candidate for this treatment. It involves using tissue from elsewhere in your body or a tissue bank to augment the implant site.

If you get a minor bone graft, it’s unlikely to significantly alter your recovery time. However, a complex bone grafting procedure could add a lot to your healing timetable. Your dentist will inform you as how to long you’ll need to stay home to ensure proper recovery.

Pre-Existing Medical Issues

Do you have pre-existing health issues like hormonal imbalance or a compromised immune system? If so, you may experience a significantly delayed recovery time. Following your surgery, you may need to wait several days or even a week before returning to your day-to-day routine. Of course, this all depends on your medical and health factors.

Following Post-Op Instructions

After your dental implant procedure, you’ll be given post-op instructions. It’s incredibly important to diligently follow them to minimize your recovery time. Most patients are instructed to keep their mouth clean to prevent infection, follow the recommended diet, avoid alcohol, and limit tobacco. Failing to do any of these could delay healing, cause infections, and affect the long-term success of your dental implants.
